Home Workshop Layout

Setting up your home workshop

Whether its just a little hobby shop or a decent sized home workshop that your planning to create. It’s essential to note that its difficult to create nice pieces without having a safe, function-able and well organized space to work from.

Where possible, try and make use of an out building such as a garage. Been relatively large, garage doors make for easy access for any raw materials, and you don’t have to be to worried about any noise your making.

Alternatively use a purpose built timber frame shed, but be sure to insulate it. This will create a nice working environment & a stable environment for you materials.

Workshop Layout

1 – Long Term Storage Rack

Keep useful lengths of lightweight timber & mouldings and similar material on a suspended ceiling rack.

2 – Storing Wood

Where practical you should try and store larger sections of timber on wall mounted brackets bolted to the wall. This will reduce any unwanted warping of the material.

3 – Storage For Man Made Boards

You should always store man made boards on their edge, raised of the floor on a purpose made storage frame that fully supports them. This also helps the boards from distorting. Keep small boards to the front.

4 – A Folding Bench

A folding bench is great for griping and supporting workpieces of all shapes a sizes. And because is portable and folds away, its easy to move out of the way when not in use.

5 – Wall Storage Tool Racks

Store most of your tools on wall mounted storage racks to save space, and you’ll also have easy access to them.

6 – First Aid Kit

A must for any home workshop regardless of its size. Always keep a well stocked first aid kit in an accessible and conspicuous position. Workshop safety should never be overlooked, trust me, as 3 years ago I nearly lost a finger due to lack of safety practices.

7 – Small Items

Store small cans, boxes and jars on narrow wall mounted shelves. Keeping assorted nails, screws, nuts & bolts etc. in glass jars allows them to be easily identified and found when need.

8 – A Decent Workshop Bench

A woodworking bench must be strong & rigid. Make your own bench using heavy softwood timbers for the legs, and use 2 to 3 layers of man made board glued together for the worktop. You can easily add a good quality vice to your workbench as required. Alternatively, you can buy a pre-made workshop bench.

9 – Electrical Sockets

Have your electrical sockets positioned above the workshop bench, so you have easy access to them for any power tools that you’ll be using.

10 – Bench Storage

Utilize the space under your work bench by adding drawers, cupboards or open shelving. You can use these to store tools or items that may be to heavy for wall storage.

11 – A Waste Bin

Use a mobile storage bin for convenience. You can line it with a bin liner to make it easier to empty.

12 – Scrap Box

Keep short lengths of useful timber in a box or bin. Add some castor wheels to make it mobile for your convenience.

13 – Assembly Area

Leave an area for cutting larger materials, for doing any assembly work or even applying any finishes to a completed piece. You can use your folding bench or even a pair of trestles to support your work.

14 – Lighting

Use florescent light fitting to provide an even illumination of your working area. Choose “daylight” tubes to make color matching of woods easier and try to take advantage of any natural daylight your can get.

15 – Security

Ensure you fit good quality locks to any doors or windows. This will help deter any burglars or inquisitive children.

Equipping a home workshop

The home workshop layout above is designed for a garage work space or a large garden shed. If the workspace you have is not large enough for a fitted bench along the large wall, then simply build it along the back shorter wall or go for a Freestanding Cabinet Makers Workbench.

Remember, even if you don’t have an extensive range of tools now, allow enough storage space for the tools you’ll acquire over time.
